Few more days to Taiwan..

Posted by icyelite on April 20, 2010

Just few more days to Taiwan but the vegetarian places I found doesn’t seems to be near to where I’m going to. Most of the places needs to travel by bus, quite a distance away from the MRT.

Most of the places found are restaurant style, seldom see any stores that are located at hawker centres (or maybe those are found in hawker centre won’t even have a link in the internet).

Had been browsing the forums and there are raves about the modern toilet restaurant, cafe grazie and tamogoya (egg-themed restaurant). These are not vegetarian restaurants but they do have at least 1 or 2 vegetarian dishes. So if you are visiting these places with your friends and you are not a very strict vegetarian, you won’t be hungry.

Anyway, here’s the link of the vegetarian places I had found so far (mainly focus on Taipei):

While browsing through the above links, it seems that most of the stores had buffet and you pay by how much you take (calculate by weight). I still have a big question mark about these places, whether the food is without onion/garlic, are the food really suitable for vegetarians, etc.  I also need to find out the exact location of it and whether it is near to where I’m visiting.  But I hope these helps for those who are going to Taipei.

Begins to start praying hard that I won’t need to eat breads and cup noodles everyday. Hope to find the restaurants above.

Simple Food @ Tampines (The Food)

Posted by icyelite on September 17, 2008

In my opinion, I would still prefer Roma Deli as compared to Simple Food due to the ambience in Roma Deli. The first time I went to Simple Food, I take away lagsana for dinner. To my dismay, I brought back a sour-taste lagsana. I called them back to “complain”, they suggested for one-to-one exchange. But I rejected because I had already reached home with a hungry stomach, no more energy to go change again when I still need to take 2 buses to get there.

Despite this scenario, it didn’t stop me from visiting them. However, I was resisted to order lagsana again. Other foods like chicken chop and such, which is freshly cooked, should not have this problem unless they did not keep the mock meats in the fridge.

The 2nd time I visited them, I lunched in together with my cousins. Simple food has a special offer menu. They had a standard set meal that comes with a drink, soup of the day and main course. I ordered a set meal with vegetarian seafood chicken chop as my course. The soup of the day is creamy mushroom soup, which tastes quite bland and watery. I feel that my creamy mushroom soup is thicker than theirs just that mine is not creamy.

Take a look at the food I had ordered on my following visits to Simple Food:

Special Offer Menu Soup of the Day
Seafood Fish Chop Hawaiian Fish Chop
Baked Rice Mango Salad

The different flavors of fish chops are something which Roma Deli did not provide. So if you wish to eat some western food, you can go to Simple Food. In fact, Simple Food sells cai fan that you can order dishes and eat together with rice. In addition, they are selling Zi Char like hokkien mee, fried bee hoon, etc.

Simple Food (Introduction & The Shop)

Simple Food is another foodstore that sells oriental, western and italian cuisine just like Roma Deli. As compared to Roma Deli, Simple Food’s ambience is like a coffeeshop. Simple Food serves more variety of food in the menu as compared to Roma Deli. Price wise, both are on par. In addition to the western food served like Roma Deli, I think they served chinese Zi Char food too.

The outlook of the shop looks just like a coffeeshop. First glance, the front view of the shop is decorated with the menu on top. At the side of the walls, it has been pasted with posters all around.

Roma Deli @ Shaw Tower

Posted by icyelite on July 27, 2008

Roma Deli is a nice place to hang out with friends, enjoying a moderate pricing of western food. It has a nice ambience but the con is the outlet is too small to contain alot of people and there are only a few tables. Everytime I go there with Andy, we were always occupying the small table of 2 near the counter. It is quite squeezy.

Address: Shaw Tower

The variety of food is not alot and the different flavours of food you ordered, may look or taste the same to you. At times, when you order chicken mushroom baked rice, you will expect to see vegetarian chicken inside but the thing is that it can’t be found. Haha, probably this is the reason why people say it taste and looks the same to all different flavours. These are some of the comments from my friends who visit the shop with me. But they were amazed that vegetarians can have this kind of vegetarian western food too.

Having this stall is an advantage to vegetarians who wanted to try different types of western food. However, to those meat eaters, they may not find it as exciting or nice, some will believe their real western food is much more tastier. Vegetarians, don’t be despair, I am sure if you are hardworking, you can slowly learn how to cook these western food too.

How Roma Deli got their food? I believe that the soup is the only fresh item daily. The rest could be well-prepared earlier or even frozen food. For instance, the pizza and baked specialties are frozen food, they just need to place it in a nice plate and heat it up. So it looks like they cooked it on their own.

What’s in their menu? Just a brief introduction to their food.

  • Soup
    • usually served in a plate/bowl, but you can have special order to served it in a bun, just add $2.70 to your set meal. Do give the soup bun a try, it is delicious. Oh a reminder, soup bun can be quite filling, so share either share it with your friends. Otherwise, just having soup bun alone is enough for most of the ladies.
    • They only have one type of soup and that is creamy mushroom soup. So don’t bother asking them what is the soup of the day.
  • Pizza
    • They have large and small size. Small size will be about 6″ and large should be about 8″.
  • Spaghetti
    • Try those that have a bit of spicy taste and it will show a difference from the other foods. For each flavours, the sauce are the same but the only difference is only in the ingredients depending on what you had ordered. For example, you ordered Italian hotdog spaghetti, you will be able to find slices of vegetarian hotdog inside. If you ordered something with vegetarian prawns, you will be able to find it inside too. The spaghetti are usually garnished with slices of lettuces.
  • Baked Rice/Pasta
    • For baked specialties, I think they add in herbs inside the rice and covered with a thick layer of cheese.
  • Sandwiches
    • This is one of the foods that I seldom see people order. Usually people will order some food that is more filling than sandwiches. Be careful when you are eating it, the ingredients in between the bread will drop.
  • Salads
    • A normal plate of salad I guess, I had never order this before.

Procedures when you reach the shop:

  1. Look for a table yourself.
  2. Have someone to reserved the table while the other go to the counter to take order.
  3. Their menu are on the board or on the counter table.
  4. You can order a set which consists of a cup of drink + main course + soup, or order individually.
  5. After taking order, they will serve your food and utensils to you.
  6. When you have finished eating,  please be automatic and kind enough to make payment at the counter.

Do take note:

  • No onions, garlics, alcohol has been used in the food
  • For a group of 2, order two main course, make one of it a set meal and change the soup to a soup bun. This will be sufficient for 2 people, just nice, won’t be too full. This is what I always do.

Some pictures that I had took:

Board of menu Additional Spices on each table
A set of utensils Chicken Mushroom Baked Rice
Pizza Soup Bun
Spaghetti Baked Specialties
Creamy Mushroom Spaghetti Seafood Baked Rice
