Loh Mai Kai (Chicken in Glutinous Rice)

Cooked Loh Mai Kai

Loh Mai Kai, as the name goes, it is the favourite food of Cantonese or rather they are the one that found this chicken in glutinous rice.

Glutinous rice is a starch food when cooked, it becomes sticky and it can be very filling when you eat half the normal rice intake. You may even feel bloated eating glutinous rice. What I usually do to stop bloating is to drink some chinese tea. It is not an immediate effect of stopping bloating but it does helps to make you feel more comfortable.

Loh Mai Kai is similar to dumplings that is wrapped in banana leaves. In fact, you may be more creative too by adding in chesnuts. You can mix your vegetarian char siew with honey so that it tastes sweet and appetizing. Otherwise, you can have your creation by having dumplings wrapped in disposable bowls instead of banana leaves. However, your “dumplings” will lack of the smell of the banana leaves that lends the dumplings a unique fragrance and flavor.

The color of the rice depends on individual, it can be black or white. Usually with a mixture of oyster sauce, dark soy sauce and soy sauce paste, the rice will be black. The recipe that I had provided below is cooking black-colored rice.

Recipe of Loh Mai Kai (Chicken in Glutinous Rice)


Glutinous Rice
Vegetarian Chicken
Vegetarian Char Siew


Mushroom Seasoning
Dark Soy Sauce
Soy Sauce Paste
Oyster Sauce (Wan Jia Xiang Brand)


  1. Dip the glutinous rice in water first while you prepare other ingredients.
  2. Fry the mushroom, vegetarian chicken and vegetarian char siew.
  3. Put the mushroom and vegetarian chicken in a pot.
  4. Add in all the seasoning shown above.
  5. In addition, add in starch to the pot of mushroom and vegetarian chicken.
  6. Let it boil and cooked. (Similar to cooking dark gravy with beancurd – look at the picture below and you will know what I am referring to, a dark gravy mixture)
  7. Filter out the glutinous rice and put inside a tin.
  8. In the tin, add in all the seasonings above again.
  9. Add in hot water into the tin of glutinous rice.
  10. Bring the tin of glutinous rice to steam.
  11. When the glutinous rice is cooked, put the mushroom, vegetarian chicken and vegetarian char siew at the bottom of the mould.
  12. Following on, fill up the mould with cooked glutinous rice.
  13. Bring it to steam for another 5 mins.

Finishing: Scoop out the ready loh mai kai onto a plate and serve. You may serve it together with belachan chilli.

Rich & Good Cake Shop – Part 6 (Others)

Rich & Good Cake Shop not only sells swiss rolls but they sell alot of other things like puffs, pineapple tarts, almond biscuits and birthday cake if you saw it in the price list. These additional items that was mentioned in the price list, I didn’t see it in the shop that day. I was wondering is it because it is a saturday and they usually do not display these additional on the shelves or you have to place order in advance before they will bake it, in other words, special order?

I read that Rich & Good Cake Shop also cater for baby-one-month celebrations and weddings. However, the things that comes to my mind is what are they catering for the baby-one-month and wedding? For Chinese, usually the cakes sent out for baby-one-month celebrations and weddings are those traditional cakes. Does Rich & Good Cake Shop bakes traditional cakes too? Or are they using swiss rolls to replace the traditional cakes?

In addition, if you read carefully in the price list given by Rich & Good Cake Shop, they actually sell birthday cake – 1kg for $35. Same issue comes to my mind too. Is the birthday cake going to be similar to how swiss roll is baked? This time is round shaped like normal birthday cake instead of being rolled up. Do they have those pretty pictures or designs on the birthday cake? Lol. Alot of questions just appear in my mind.

If you are interested in buying all these additional items, maybe you can call up and check with them. I believe the shop owner will be more glad to answer your doubts.

Coming to the last point of the whole Rich & Good Cake Shop, I believe that the swiss rolls will be a good gift for your friends, family and relatives. They are placed inside a peach-colored presentable box. However, the main issue that concerns me about the packaging is the carrier given. That day, I was given normal plastic bag to put my boxes of swiss rolls which may not be as presentable if you want to give out immediately to your friends. I am not sure if the shop has a nicer paper bag, if they have it, this would be the best.

I hope the posts on Rich & Good Cake Shop will benefits people who are interested to find out more about them. But do note that above all are my opinions and reviews of the shop, I may have a totally different perception as you. 🙂

You can have a choice of mixing 2 flavors in one box or having the same flavor in one box. The prices range from $11 to $13 per box. However, if you have 2 flavors in one box, they will charge it by per roll.

Rich & Good Cake Shop – Part 4 (The Swiss Rolls)

If you have read Rich & Good Cake Shop – Part 1 (Introduction), you should know that I had quite a good impression of the swiss rolls from the shop. This is the reason why I am personally traveling down to the shop and personally try the different flavors of their swiss rolls. I would like to know whether the swiss rolls are really recommendable.

The shop sells the swiss roll in an uncut roll, however, if you have a special request, they can cut it into half for you and placed it in a smaller box. Each uncut roll is about 30cm and it fits nicely in the box, which is in peach/pink color.

Mixture of different flavors swiss rolls

I would recommend that you eat the swiss roll immediately when you just take it out from the fridge. The taste will feels more refreshing. Eat it slowly and enjoy the taste and smell of the swiss roll, thinking of how this swiss roll is baked. The number of pieces intake will be higher too. You won’t feel sick of it. However, if you leave it outside for sometimes, the swiss roll may taste “jelat” (the feeling of eating too much makes you feel abit sick of it) if you eat one or two pieces. Not sure if it is me only, no offense to the Rich & Good Cake Shop, it is only my own opinion.

Flavors that I had tried before:

Below are comments or opinions on the flavors that I had tried before. For your info, while noting down the comments, I had actually tried the most centre piece of the swiss roll and at its freshest period of time.

You can taste that the cake of the swiss roll has the flavor and smell of each flavors. It is very soft that when I was cutting the swiss roll, I dare not apply too much pressure on the swiss roll, otherwise, I will leave a mark on the cake.

Blueberry Swiss Roll

Blueberry – spread with blueberry jam. The blueberry swiss roll that I got that day is not rolled tightly and if you do not take the swiss roll properly, it will become a long piece with blueberry jam all over. The jam is quite sticky and it may overflow out abit if you press hard on the swiss roll. So beware when you are eating blueberry swiss roll, not to get your clothes dirty. Do take note that the blueberry swiss roll is brown in color too, so don’t mistake it for coffee-flavored swiss roll.

Coffee Swiss Roll

Coffee – spread inside the swiss roll seems to be coffee-flavored fresh cream. When you open up the swiss roll to cut, you will smell a strong coffee aroma. However, when you eat it, it doesn’t taste as nice as you expect. Consecutively eating a few pieces of the coffee-flavored swiss roll, the coffee smell still lingers in my mouth.

Durian Swiss Roll

Durian – Just when you are about to put inside the swiss roll inside your mouth, you can smell the durian. Putting the durian swiss roll inside your mouth, oh my goodness, I can feel the durian paste touching my tongue. Yummy, its so delicious. A must try if you are a durian lover.

Kaya Swiss Roll

Kaya – spread with kaya paste. Eat it while the kaya paste inside is still cold, you will feel the kaya swiss roll is nice.

Mango Swiss Roll

Mango – spread with fresh cream and mango pulp in between. When I just took the mango swiss roll out, I can feel the mango pulp hasn’t thaw yet.

Strawberry Swiss Roll

Strawberry – spread inside is a combination of fresh cream and strawberry puree. In fact, it tasted like eating strawberry cake spread with strawberry jam. In my opinion, the strawberry swiss roll tastes very sweet that I can only eat one piece of it.

How long can you keep the swiss roll? I had posted this question to the owner of the shop. She mentions that if you keep it in freezer, it can last you for 1 or 2 months. There are even caterers that order from them and keep the swiss rolls in the freezer for 6 months before they served it to their customers. 6 months, doesn’t this sounds too long?

Rich & Good Cake Shop – Part 3 (The shop)

From the outside of the shop, it gives me a feel of an old shop that you can find in the eighties. The shop is painted with blue and pink. Standing outside, it gives me a feeling that there is an experienced old man further inside the shop baking the swiss rolls.

Rich & Good Cake Shop seems to have a small balcony before the main entrance into the shop. When I was there, I saw a malay uncle folding the boxes for the swiss rolls, seems like he could be an employer of the shop. Without further delay, I stepped into the shop and I was welcomed by a friendly lady. She should be the lady boss, Lily Liu, which I believes she is in her sixties now. It is the first time to the shop, so I was quite lost about how should I go about buying or ordering my swiss rolls. She approached me and ask what swiss rolls I want and I can buy any flavors that I want that is available in the fridge.

The interior of the shop isn’t nicely decorated like any other bakery shops (Bread Talk, QBread, Bread History) to attract the customers. Inside the shop, there isn’t nice racks or shelves displaying the cakes or swiss rolls that is freshly baked. This shows that Rich & Good Cake Shop It is just a shelf putting their own things, which I believe in normal days, they use it to put other pastries that does not needs to be in the fridge.

In front of it is a movable rack that is even taller than me. It is filled with all swiss rolls in all different types of flavors. The swiss rolls seems to be freshly baked, leaving it at the cooling rack in an unroll form.

Besides the freshly baked swiss rolls placed in the rack, there is also freshly baked swiss rolls in the fridge waiting for customers to buy it on the spot, just like people like me. The swiss rolls are all put inside the box. There are tags placed inside the fridge indicating the flavor of the swiss roll and the price per box.
