Blueberry Pie @ Hans

Posted by icyelite on October 19, 2008

I went to Hans with Andy @ Far East Plaza. It was almost dinner time, instead of ordering those usual meal, I had ordered blueberry pie. Hoping that it will gives me an idea of how to bake it in future or even teach me the different ways of baking an apple pie. I believe the way to bake an apple pie and a blueberry pie is similar.

In fact, I am not sure of the correct naming of this blueberry pie. But it has crumbles on top and decorated with chocolate chips which enhances the taste of the blueberry pie. Yum yum, I love it. Is there any peach pie since apples and blueberry can become a pie. Oh, how about a durian pie too? Lol.

McCafe – Cafe Latte

Posted by icyelite on October 4, 2008

On 4 Oct 2008, I went to McCafe with andy after my first day of Saturday rostered duty. Initially, we were thinking of walking towards Starbucks at level 2. Suddenly, andy stopped and keep looking into the McCafe  for power plug. Oh well, we were lucky that day, we found a comfortable seat with power plug. This is a good news.

That day, I wanted to order hot drink to keep myself warm. Don’t feel like drinking hot tea, so andy suggested I ordered from mcCafe. It’s the first time I order from mcCafe, hmmm, looking at the menu. I had a feeling I’m at Starbucks or Coffeebean. I ordered Cafe Latte, one of my favorite drink.

After ordering, I wasn’t given any receipt but was told to go back to sit and she will serve it to me shortly. Waited for 10 minutes, my latte came.

Why isn’t there latte art on top of my latte? If there is a M sign, maybe it would be nice? Lol. Where to learn latte art, though I know my art is real lousy. Haha.

The latte doesn’t smells as nice as those in coffeebean or starbucks. So don’t expect to have a nice smelling, tasty latte at McCafe. The latte that came, it is not hot but just warm. So in the cold environment, the latte becomes cold very fast.

Piao Xiang Vegetarian @ Fortune Centre

Posted by icyelite on September 15, 2008

Piao Xiang Vegetarian is a very old stall. I had always tagged along with them to their new location.  Last time, they were located at bedok coffeeshop. Their new location is at Fortune Centre, Bugis now. Everytime I visit the stall, there are always alot of people.

Address: Fortune Centre Level 2, go up from the escalator and turn left

Piao Xiang Vegetarian is known for their zi char. In the past, Xing Zhou Bee Hoon, Hong Kong noodles are their signature dishes in my opinion. Till now, these are still their signature dishes. Today, they came up with new dishes like Claypot rice, Nasi Bryani and Baked rice. Well, I hadn’t got the chance to try all their new dishes yet.

Andy tried their Claypot rice today, his comments is “it tastes normal”. I guess claypot rice is still new to them, so not as good as other places yet. More improvements to be done.

Ever since Piao Siang moved to fortune centre, the food initially tastes as good as before. However, recently, I realised there is a drop in their standard. Nowadays, the food tastes salty, feedbacks were given to the store owner and he mentioned that there was a change in the chef. Well, last time, the foods were cooked by the store owner himself. I guess he’s near the retirement age, he wishes to pass it on to someone else to cook while he stays in the frontline tending to the customers’ needs, easier job.

Last time, I used to like their Bak Kut Teh. The smell of mushroom and the amount of pepper in it tastes superb. It tastes like they had boiled the soup for a very very long time. But now, it no longer have the strong smell, only smell of pepper. The Bak Kut Teh doesn’t taste as nice as last time too.

Alright, it wasn’t really too bad comments for them, overall their food is still quite good. For instance, their Hong Kong Noodles, Mee goreng, etc still tastes as nice. Do visit them if you pass by.

Happy Arts Deli @ Simei Metta School (Daily special)

Posted by icyelite on September 15, 2008

Everyday, Happy Arts Deli will have a different daily special. Recently, they had just changed the sequence of their daily special. I can’t remember which day has which special but at least, the list of food doesn’t change totally.

Take a look at the daily special they had for each week:

Vegetarian Chicken Rice Vegetarian Chinese-style Bento Set

Comments on daily special:

  • Vegetarian Chicken Rice: This seems to be the most popular daily special of the week. The first time I wanted to buy their chicken rice, it has been sold out when I visited them at 12pm. Can you imagine that the chicken rice is so fast selling that even during the official lunch time, I couldn’t find a single plate. So, the following week, I went there earlier to try it. I would say its not bad, but for people who doesn’t likes to eat mock meat, this may be something you shouldn’t try. They have vegetarian char siew and vegetarian chicken. In my opinion, I would say this chicken rice is average which I would not go all the way out for it.
  • Vegetarian Chinese-style Bento Set: Quite a big set of bento that can be quite filling. The vegetarian mock meat is quite tasty cooked with black pepper sauce. A saute of nai bai vegetable and few pieces of honeydew and grapes. If I remember correctly, this bento set costs $6 per set.

Roma Deli @ Shaw Tower

Posted by icyelite on July 27, 2008

Roma Deli is a nice place to hang out with friends, enjoying a moderate pricing of western food. It has a nice ambience but the con is the outlet is too small to contain alot of people and there are only a few tables. Everytime I go there with Andy, we were always occupying the small table of 2 near the counter. It is quite squeezy.

Address: Shaw Tower

The variety of food is not alot and the different flavours of food you ordered, may look or taste the same to you. At times, when you order chicken mushroom baked rice, you will expect to see vegetarian chicken inside but the thing is that it can’t be found. Haha, probably this is the reason why people say it taste and looks the same to all different flavours. These are some of the comments from my friends who visit the shop with me. But they were amazed that vegetarians can have this kind of vegetarian western food too.

Having this stall is an advantage to vegetarians who wanted to try different types of western food. However, to those meat eaters, they may not find it as exciting or nice, some will believe their real western food is much more tastier. Vegetarians, don’t be despair, I am sure if you are hardworking, you can slowly learn how to cook these western food too.

How Roma Deli got their food? I believe that the soup is the only fresh item daily. The rest could be well-prepared earlier or even frozen food. For instance, the pizza and baked specialties are frozen food, they just need to place it in a nice plate and heat it up. So it looks like they cooked it on their own.

What’s in their menu? Just a brief introduction to their food.

  • Soup
    • usually served in a plate/bowl, but you can have special order to served it in a bun, just add $2.70 to your set meal. Do give the soup bun a try, it is delicious. Oh a reminder, soup bun can be quite filling, so share either share it with your friends. Otherwise, just having soup bun alone is enough for most of the ladies.
    • They only have one type of soup and that is creamy mushroom soup. So don’t bother asking them what is the soup of the day.
  • Pizza
    • They have large and small size. Small size will be about 6″ and large should be about 8″.
  • Spaghetti
    • Try those that have a bit of spicy taste and it will show a difference from the other foods. For each flavours, the sauce are the same but the only difference is only in the ingredients depending on what you had ordered. For example, you ordered Italian hotdog spaghetti, you will be able to find slices of vegetarian hotdog inside. If you ordered something with vegetarian prawns, you will be able to find it inside too. The spaghetti are usually garnished with slices of lettuces.
  • Baked Rice/Pasta
    • For baked specialties, I think they add in herbs inside the rice and covered with a thick layer of cheese.
  • Sandwiches
    • This is one of the foods that I seldom see people order. Usually people will order some food that is more filling than sandwiches. Be careful when you are eating it, the ingredients in between the bread will drop.
  • Salads
    • A normal plate of salad I guess, I had never order this before.

Procedures when you reach the shop:

  1. Look for a table yourself.
  2. Have someone to reserved the table while the other go to the counter to take order.
  3. Their menu are on the board or on the counter table.
  4. You can order a set which consists of a cup of drink + main course + soup, or order individually.
  5. After taking order, they will serve your food and utensils to you.
  6. When you have finished eating,  please be automatic and kind enough to make payment at the counter.

Do take note:

  • No onions, garlics, alcohol has been used in the food
  • For a group of 2, order two main course, make one of it a set meal and change the soup to a soup bun. This will be sufficient for 2 people, just nice, won’t be too full. This is what I always do.

Some pictures that I had took:

A set of utensils Chicken Mushroom Baked Rice
