McCafe – Mochaholic Frappe

Posted by icyelite on October 29, 2008

I went to McCafe at suntec again with Andy. As usual, we go there to “study” together. Since its still before 30 October, I ordered from McCafe for 50 cents off the drink. Looking at the menu, not much variety to choose from, so I decided to try the usual Mocha that Starbucks and Coffeebean sells.

Mochaholic Frappe

Other than the usual Mocha, I saw a longer name with chocolate chips glazed on the whipped cream, Mochaholic Frappe. For frappe in McCafe, they only have one size, no large, medium or small for you to choose. The name “Mochaholic Frappe” sounds just like its a drink with lots of mocha powder.

The McCafe at suntec seems like only have 1 or 2 staffs at the counter, so usually I will have to wait for sometimes before I can get my drink. ** They are quite slow in their service. **

My comments for the drink: If I can choose, I don’t think I will go for the drink again or choose McCafe for coffee. Well, the coffee taste may not be as strong as Starbucks or Coffeebean. Im fine with it since it is cheaper at McCafe. What really matters to me is the hotness and coldness of the drink, the hot drink is not hot, cold drink is not cold enough. Hmm sounds like bad comments from me.

If not for the comfy seat that Suntec Macdonalds has, I doubt I will go there again. Oh yah, sometimes the aircon there doesn’t seems to be working. Quite stuffy at times or maybe there are too many people in suntec?

The only thing that I like about McCafe is the pictures on their cups. No matter it is hot drink or cold drink, they will have small logos like Cup + Bean = Coffee.

These are the pictures I took from my Mochaholic drink. Isn’t it nice and meaningful?

Cool + To Go = ?

What is the answer?? Make a guess. Click here for answer. =)

Blueberry Pie @ Hans

Posted by icyelite on October 19, 2008

I went to Hans with Andy @ Far East Plaza. It was almost dinner time, instead of ordering those usual meal, I had ordered blueberry pie. Hoping that it will gives me an idea of how to bake it in future or even teach me the different ways of baking an apple pie. I believe the way to bake an apple pie and a blueberry pie is similar.

In fact, I am not sure of the correct naming of this blueberry pie. But it has crumbles on top and decorated with chocolate chips which enhances the taste of the blueberry pie. Yum yum, I love it. Is there any peach pie since apples and blueberry can become a pie. Oh, how about a durian pie too? Lol.

Apple Pie – 1st Try

Posted by icyelite on October 19, 2008

This is my first time trying baking an Apple Pie. What’s the result? Haha, its an edible yet unpresentable apple pie. I guess is because my pie crust is too thick, both on top and below. In order to make it edible, you know what I did? I flipped the whole apple pie upside down and bake it again, resulting in the upper crust smash into pieces. Omg. Since its my first try, I rather make it edible than presentable.

The second time I gonna make it, I better learn my lesson. Lol. Thinner crust. Oh yah and smaller cubes of apples. My first try was thick slices of apples which I find it alright but my “testers” all recommend me to make it smaller.

I will put my recipe here since I will still follow the measurements given. You can twist a little bit after knowing my problems, like smaller cubes of apples, thick crust ==> either use a bigger pan size or reduce the amount of flour. By the way, the size of my pie pan is 6″, which explains the overloaded crust.

Recipe of Apple Pie

Ingredients:

Pastry:

532g plain flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
150g unsalted butter
118g vegetable shortening
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

Filling:
177g sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg powder
2 to 3 teaspoons tapioca flour or cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 big apples (sliced)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
30ml unsalted butter
1 tablespoon sugar

Preparations:

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a big mixing bowl.
  2. Cut the butter into smaller pieces and add it into the mixing bowl gradually.
  3. Following, add the vegetable shortening and apple cider vinegar.
  4. Keep mixing until the dough gathers into a ball.
  5. Divide the dough into half, separate it by putting into different bowl or wrap it separately.
  6. Put it into fridge for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven.
  8. While the dough is chilling in the fridge, we prepare the filling.
  9. Peel and sliced the apples.
  10. Add in all the ingredients for the filling into another mixing bowl.
  11. After 30 minutes, take out the dough.
  12. Spread the pie pan with oil.
  13. Spread one portion of the dough into the pie pan, well spread.
  14. Add in the ingredients.
  15. The other half of the dough, use a roller to make it round and flat first.
  16. Cover it above the apple mixtures.
  17. Do a nice closing for the apple pie.
  18. Bake the pie at 200 degrees for 50 minutes. Observe it while it is baking.

Tips:

  • For the filling, make sure the tapioca flour is well mixed, otherwise you will be able to taste “glue” in your apple pie.

Finishing: Cut the apple pie into smaller pieces. Scoop one slice out and served.

When baking the apple pie, there are alot of small details to take note of. Continue reading my blog for my successful apple pie. =)

McCafe – Cafe Latte

Posted by icyelite on October 4, 2008

On 4 Oct 2008, I went to McCafe with andy after my first day of Saturday rostered duty. Initially, we were thinking of walking towards Starbucks at level 2. Suddenly, andy stopped and keep looking into the McCafe  for power plug. Oh well, we were lucky that day, we found a comfortable seat with power plug. This is a good news.

That day, I wanted to order hot drink to keep myself warm. Don’t feel like drinking hot tea, so andy suggested I ordered from mcCafe. It’s the first time I order from mcCafe, hmmm, looking at the menu. I had a feeling I’m at Starbucks or Coffeebean. I ordered Cafe Latte, one of my favorite drink.

After ordering, I wasn’t given any receipt but was told to go back to sit and she will serve it to me shortly. Waited for 10 minutes, my latte came.

Why isn’t there latte art on top of my latte? If there is a M sign, maybe it would be nice? Lol. Where to learn latte art, though I know my art is real lousy. Haha.

The latte doesn’t smells as nice as those in coffeebean or starbucks. So don’t expect to have a nice smelling, tasty latte at McCafe. The latte that came, it is not hot but just warm. So in the cold environment, the latte becomes cold very fast.
