Roma Deli @ Shaw Tower

Posted by icyelite on July 27, 2008

Roma Deli is a nice place to hang out with friends, enjoying a moderate pricing of western food. It has a nice ambience but the con is the outlet is too small to contain alot of people and there are only a few tables. Everytime I go there with Andy, we were always occupying the small table of 2 near the counter. It is quite squeezy.

Address: Shaw Tower

The variety of food is not alot and the different flavours of food you ordered, may look or taste the same to you. At times, when you order chicken mushroom baked rice, you will expect to see vegetarian chicken inside but the thing is that it can’t be found. Haha, probably this is the reason why people say it taste and looks the same to all different flavours. These are some of the comments from my friends who visit the shop with me. But they were amazed that vegetarians can have this kind of vegetarian western food too.

Having this stall is an advantage to vegetarians who wanted to try different types of western food. However, to those meat eaters, they may not find it as exciting or nice, some will believe their real western food is much more tastier. Vegetarians, don’t be despair, I am sure if you are hardworking, you can slowly learn how to cook these western food too.

How Roma Deli got their food? I believe that the soup is the only fresh item daily. The rest could be well-prepared earlier or even frozen food. For instance, the pizza and baked specialties are frozen food, they just need to place it in a nice plate and heat it up. So it looks like they cooked it on their own.

What’s in their menu? Just a brief introduction to their food.

  • Soup
    • usually served in a plate/bowl, but you can have special order to served it in a bun, just add $2.70 to your set meal. Do give the soup bun a try, it is delicious. Oh a reminder, soup bun can be quite filling, so share either share it with your friends. Otherwise, just having soup bun alone is enough for most of the ladies.
    • They only have one type of soup and that is creamy mushroom soup. So don’t bother asking them what is the soup of the day.
  • Pizza
    • They have large and small size. Small size will be about 6″ and large should be about 8″.
  • Spaghetti
    • Try those that have a bit of spicy taste and it will show a difference from the other foods. For each flavours, the sauce are the same but the only difference is only in the ingredients depending on what you had ordered. For example, you ordered Italian hotdog spaghetti, you will be able to find slices of vegetarian hotdog inside. If you ordered something with vegetarian prawns, you will be able to find it inside too. The spaghetti are usually garnished with slices of lettuces.
  • Baked Rice/Pasta
    • For baked specialties, I think they add in herbs inside the rice and covered with a thick layer of cheese.
  • Sandwiches
    • This is one of the foods that I seldom see people order. Usually people will order some food that is more filling than sandwiches. Be careful when you are eating it, the ingredients in between the bread will drop.
  • Salads
    • A normal plate of salad I guess, I had never order this before.

Procedures when you reach the shop:

  1. Look for a table yourself.
  2. Have someone to reserved the table while the other go to the counter to take order.
  3. Their menu are on the board or on the counter table.
  4. You can order a set which consists of a cup of drink + main course + soup, or order individually.
  5. After taking order, they will serve your food and utensils to you.
  6. When you have finished eating,  please be automatic and kind enough to make payment at the counter.

Do take note:

  • No onions, garlics, alcohol has been used in the food
  • For a group of 2, order two main course, make one of it a set meal and change the soup to a soup bun. This will be sufficient for 2 people, just nice, won’t be too full. This is what I always do.

Some pictures that I had took:

Board of menu Additional Spices on each table
A set of utensils Chicken Mushroom Baked Rice

Peony Jade Restaurant

Posted by icyelite on July 27, 2008

I went to attend my cousin’s ROM reception at Peony Jade Restaurant. He had specially ordered a table of pure vegetarian food for us prepared by Peony Jade Restaurant. Pure vegetarian meaning no onion, no garlic, no alcohol in the food and the cutlery used to cook our food is separate from those that has been used to cook meat.

Having a wedding lunch reception prepared by Peony Jade, I would expect that the food weren’t be as nice. After attending several wedding dinners at different hotels, it leaves me an impression that the foods prepared by non-vegetarians chefs are not as nice as real vegetarian chefs. However, Peony Jade changes my mindset that day.

What’s in the list for the vegetarian menu?

  1. Vegetarian Combination Delight
  2. Braised Fungus & Golden Mushroom Soup
  3. Pan-Fried Vegetarian Cod Fish with Soya Sauce
  4. Deep Fried Chicken with Fruit Sauce
  5. Stewed Vegetarian Abalone & Bailing Mushroom
  6. Stir-Fried Vegetarian Venison with Black Pepper Sauce
  7. Sauteed Vegetarian Prawns with Special Sauce
  8. Fried Empress Noodles with Vegetarian Goose
  9. Chilled Mango with Pomelo Sauce
Braised Fungus & Golden Mushroom Soup

One of the recommended dish from above is Braised Fungus & Golden Mushroom Soup which is commonly known as Shark Fin Soup.  The main ingredients are white fungus, golden mushroom and water chestnuts. Instead of cutting the ingredients into stripes like a shark fin, they diced it into very small pieces. Chewy and tasty soup.

Another recommended dish is their dessert. The dessert is chilled mango with pomelo sauce. It’s a thick mango puree with pomelo and abit of pomelo sauce. This is unlike other places where I had tried before, it is very watery and the pomelo sauce is too much that I find it sour. That day, the dessert is served cold that makes you shivers abit when you put inside your mouth. In addition, it tastes sweet instead of sour.

Yum yum delicious food. One of the cons is the dishes served does not have vegetables at all. All are mock meats. I wasn’t able to take picture of the food this time because a plate of food is shared by everyone instead of served individually, it will be rude of me to take picture before everyone can start eating.

The utensils used are also different from what I had usually see. The shapes of the plates and the unique colors of the plates. In addition, they are using a pebble as a stand for the chopsticks.

Soft Croissants

My brother introduced this soft croissant called wassant in Japanese. It comes in 2 flavours, cream and chocolate. Chocolate is a must try for all. I am not someone who really loves chocolate but even I got attracted to this chocolate-flavored soft croissant.

How does it taste? Lol. Just like what the name says, it is soft, texture is as soft as a fresh bread even after few days. When you bite the chocolate flavour, you can taste and smell the chocolate. I tired heating it up after leaving the wassant outside for a day, but it doesn’t taste as good. I can’t smell or taste any chocolate after heating up, maybe I had overheat it?

Price. Each wassant costs $0.60, you can buy individually or in a pack. In a pack, there are 10 wassants. It is either 10 cream wassants or 10 chocolate wassants or 5 cream wassants and 5 chocolates wassants. There is no special pricing for a packet, it costs $6 per pack.

If you are going to The Central next time, remember to look out for Petit Provence.

First week at Work

Posted by icyelite on July 25, 2008

Today marks the end of my first week at work. Oh well, saw alot of new faces, some I can remember the face but not the name, some I know the name but don’t know who is who. But I can say they are all quite friendly and it takes abit of time for me to be closer with them and have more interaction.

On my first day of work, I received a big news from my boss and that is there will be a management change as of 1st August. My name will be virtually transferred to another company’s name. Omg, my friends were asking “Did they cheat you to go in?” The answer is I doubt because my fellow colleagues were affected too. This news doesn’t impact me alot or rather, I did not think far and the consequences of the future. I am still in the mood of adjusting to my new workplace and learning new stuffs.

So what have I been doing for the whole week? Basically, its only reading documentations, attending all types of briefing about the organization. But most of the time is still reading documentations, haha, sometimes I read till wanna fall asleep. So dry and it is a super outdated document which is documented on FY 1997. 10 years ago!!! I can’t find the function that I want, I can’t find the correct way of using the system. I guess just read through for the moment, until my senior guides me along.

This organization teaches us to have a work-life balance. So they had alot of activities for us to join. My colleagues asked me to join them for jogging. Their jogging isn’t for leisure, they ran about 10km.  Oh gosh, how can they ask someone who hasn’t been jogging for so many years? Haha.. I will be breathless chasing after them. Another colleague asked me to join her for gardening. I like the flowers, but I don’t like worms.

Lol. I guess I will tag along with them for these activities when I’m closer with them. Or maybe next week, because I am still adapting to the new workplace. 🙂

Oh yah, take a look at the mini pantry that is just right behind me. Lol. Although it seems like there are alot of foods, if you can see clearly, there are alot of empty containers too. There are pros and cons for a mini pantry to be right behind me. Pros: Just turn behind, I can eat whatever I want. Cons: Everybody who comes to take some snacks can see what I am doing at my workstation. >_< No Privacy.

Bouquet of White lilies

Posted by icyelite on July 19, 2008

On the 15th July 2008, this is the first time I received a bouquet of flowers and it is my favorite white lilies.

Flowers are very expensive that’s why I always tell my SO not to waste money. No matter what occasion it may be, I always tell my SO not to buy flowers for me. It may be a moment of happiness when you received it but the lifespan of flowers are short. In addition, sometimes I have a ‘paiseh’/shy feeling for taking flowers here and there.

There was once I received a stalk of champage rose from Le Baroque during 2006 Valentine’s Day, even though it is only a small stalk, I am still shy to take it on my hand walking around. Lucky that day I had a big bag with me to put it inside. 😀

However, on 15th July, I sincerely feel happy about taking that bouquet of flowers even though I hold it for awhile. I feel so honored carrying this bouquet of flowers. Looking around in the vicinity, I don’t see anyone carrying the same flower as me. Only me, carrying my beloved flowers.

The meaning of white lily: Purity, modesty, virginity, majesty, it’s heavenly to be with you. The white lily is linked to Juno, the queen of the gods in Roman mythology, by the story that while nursing her son Hercules, some excess milk fell from the sky creating the group of stars we call the Milky Way, and lilies were created from what milk fell to the earth. The Easter lily is also known as the symbol of the Virgin Mary.

Doesn’t the meaning of white lily sounds wow to you? To me, it has the meaning of purity, sincerity and it produces a trumpet sound in my heart.

Take a look at my bouquet of lilies:

Bouquet of White Lilies Wrapped in purple and white

How many flowers and leaves did the florist use? Let’s count.

Main flower – White Lilies
Round Green Flower Middle Purple/White/Pink Flower
Oblong-shaped Purple Flower Small Yellow Flower
Star-shaped Leaf Long Leaf

Wow. So many matching flowers, no wonder flower nice, price of the flowers also nice. Lol. Some of the flowers are expensive which explains why the bouquet is expensive too. I do not know the name of flowers, so just named it by their shape and colors. 😀

Bouquet Few Days Later – Bigger Lilies

It has been few days since I received the bouquet. I placed the bouquet in my living room, if you walk near it, you can smell the lovely lily smell. Can you notice that the lilies are growing bigger and bigger? One of the lilies is now as big as my hand. Praying hard that it won’t dry up so fast.
