DJ Bakery

Posted by icyelite on June 30, 2008

DJ Bakery, is selling swiss rolls too, similar to Rich & Good Cake Shop. However, the quality may lose out abit to Rich & Good Cake Shop. Its may seems to be a simpler, cheaper and not as reputable as Rich & Good Cake Shop.

Seems like the first paragraph keep saying that Rich & Good Cake Shop is better than DJ Bakery. However, in my opinion, both shops have their pros and cons. DJ Bakery has their pros in locating in several locations of singapore and it is a cheaper version of what Rich & Good Cake Shop is selling. DJ Bakery are located at strategic neighbouring areas as follows (there maybe slight errors when typing the add/tel/fax):

  • Head Office/ Factory
    • Blk 7 Hougang Ave 3 #01-56 Singapore 530007

    • Blk 743 Yishun Ave 5 #01-535 Singapore 760743. Tel/Fax: 67532975

Flavors that I had eaten so far, there are more flavors available:

  • Strawberry
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Kaya
  • Mango
  • Yam
Take a look at the swiss rolls from DJ Bakery, they provide alot of flavors too. My favorites are coffee and chocolate.

If I had a better camera, you will be able to see that the texture of the swiss roll is similar to that of the Rich & Good Cake Shop. Similar small holes/pores can be found. Smooth texture.

Rich & Good Cake Shop – Part 1 (Introduction)

Posted by icyelite on June 30, 2008

Rich & Good Cake Shop sells delicious, yummy swiss rolls. I hadn’t been to the shop before and not sure what other cakes or pastries they are selling. But it seems that the most famous pastries from the shop is the swiss rolls. It comes in all different types of flavors.

Where is the shop located at:

24 Kandahar Street Singapore 198887
Tel: 62943324   Fax: 62952831

Operating Hours:

Mon – Sat: 8am – 5pm
Closed on Sun & Public Holidays

How to go there? Lol. Like I said earlier, I hadn’t been to the shop yet, so I’m not too sure about where is the exact location of the shop and which could be the easiest way to reach there. Oh well, the shop doesn’t seems to have a website so the only way to know more about them is through telephone or physically visit the shop.

This is the Part 1 of Rich & Good Cake Shop, I will do a follow up post when I visit the shop personally. Before I go to the shop, let’s have a preview of the swiss rolls sold in Rich & Good Cake Shop. Why does it attracts so many people to buy swiss rolls from them?

Flavors available:

  • Blueberry
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Durian
  • Kaya
  • Mango
  • Strawberry
  • Others

So far, I had tried Kaya and Mango. When you see them, it will makes you drool. They are generous in spreading sufficient kaya onto the swiss roll. As for the mango, they included small pieces of mangoes to have a greater taste. Eating one small piece of each is insufficient. You will feel like eating one piece after another, non-stop. Its so delicious that you can’t imagine right now.

Kaya. Does the kaya looks delicious? Look at the mango in between

Still not convince about the taste of the swiss roll, take a look at the side view of the swiss roll. The swiss roll is very soft. The surface of the swiss roll looks as delicate as a lady’s face, soft and smooth. The holes in the swiss roll are very small, just like how an eggless cake looks like. It is unlike the sponge cake. How to describe the feeling when you first bite it? When you put the swiss roll into your mouth, it just starts to slowly melt in your mouth. You can feel the softness of the swiss roll and the taste /flavor of the swiss roll.

Side view of the cake – small pores

The box or rather packaging of the swiss roll is nice too. It’s not too fanciful, it’s a peach color box with the address of Rich & Good Cake Shop and indication of the different types of flavors.

The box

I heard that the swiss rolls are sold in a long long roll and the durian flavor is a must try if you like durian. How true is this? Shall let you know when I visit the shop personally. Keep a lookout for more updates on the Rich & Good Cake Shop. 🙂

Wholemeal Mee Soya Noodle

Posted by icyelite on June 30, 2008

Wholemeal Mee Soya Noodle

Nowadays, more and more food are getting healthier. More and more food are going wholemeal, multigrain, more food with higher fibres are coming up. This is the first time I saw a wholemeal mee soya noodle. My dad bought it from Malaysia. The taste is similar to the wholemeal bread. Similarly, the noodle has brown visible grains just like a wholemeal bread.

So what can you do to this noodle? Of cos, cook it like a normal soup noodles. Cook it just like how you cook yang chun mian? Mee Rubus? Or any other noodles that you would like.

In the packaging of the noodles, there is a piece of note that teaches you how to cook it. Here’s a picture of it:

Instructions for cooking Wholemeal Mee Soya:

You can choose to use it to cook as Mee Rubus/Stew Mee Soya

  1. Pour water into a pot and boil it.
  2. Put Mee Soya into the boiling water then stir gently and take it out.
  3. Ingredients: Can use prawn, fish, chicken or others. Fry the self-prepared ingredients, then add in Mee Soya together with water and stew it for 1 to 2 minutes. Food is then ready to serve.

Let me show you how I cooked mine:

1. Cut the carrot 2. Pluck the Shanghai Green vegetables

3. Add in vegetarian mock meat into the pot of water.
4. Add in the mee soya when the water is boiling.
5. Add in the necessary seasoning or use mushroom seasoning.

6. When its cooked, the food is ready to serve. Look at the color combination, does it makes you drool?

Feedbacks about the wedding held in Park Hotel

Posted by icyelite on June 29, 2008

Remember the previous post that I had attend my friend’s wedding @ park hotel? Just few days ago, she called me. She came back from her honeymoon and was asking feedback with regards to the food and the environment that happened that day. Well, I mentioned to her whatever I saw that day and how I feel that day.

Regarding the food, overall is okay but just find that too much mock meat is making me feel sick of it and the overcooked broccoli. I thought my food is bad is ok since I’m the minority eating vegetarian during the dinner. Who knows, there are even complaints that the real meat doesn’t taste nice too. Haha, my friend says that in the past, before the hotel is known as Park Hotel, they are known as Crown Prince Hotel. In addition, they change the chef recently. In the past, the food is superbly nice as my friend mentions. But now, its totally bad. She thought a change in chef may not be so worse in the food, but unexpectedly, the food wasn’t good at all. She was so sad because my friend is someone who is quite choosy in food and wedding is once in a lifetime.  Everytime meet her, have to find a place that can suits her mouth. Lol. Single complaint about it, it will spoil her day. Haha, so can you see how particular she is about the food.

Regarding the environment, as mention in previous post, the screen is placed too low that people sitting at the back can’t see clearly. The very first bad impression of the hotel is having technical fault when the couple is going to march in. The technical fault not only affects the guests but the couples too. The couple were standing outside but keep wondering what is going on inside, why the door ain’t open yet while the guests inside were standing for 5 minutes, feeling excited about the entrance of the couple but they weren’t in yet.

Since wedding is once in a lifetime, there are bound to be flaws. Its hard to have a perfect wedding dinner but all newly weds especially the bride would definitely wished to have a perfect, well-organized and satisfied wedding.

After much complaining to me, my friend begins to give me advice for my future wedding. Haha, here are some issues maybe in the future you people can take note too:

  • Sisters sitting at the receptionist did not keep the attendance list of the guests and was seen by everyone who went to the toilet. For people who left early during the dinner, the bride wasn’t able to keep track of the people who attended the dinner.
  • Tell your sisters at the receptionist to encourage the guests to write down some words for the newly weds. This will be a memorable gift to the couple.
  • Sisters, do take note of the newly wed’s ang baos too. I heard that one of my friends had to escort the ladies when they carry the ang bao because there was once someone steal the ang bao away. Omg, someone actually did this.
  • When taking photo at each table, get one person to help prepare the other table while you take picture at the other table.
  • Don’t play too much at the stage, leave it to the later part of the dinner or after the dinner. That’s because the couple needs to take picture at all tables and have to send off all the guests.
  • It would be best if you can arrange your friends who are more participative to sit in front/centre of the hall or nearer to the stage. That’s because its these people who will make your night more enjoying and wonderful. Wedding is supposed to be a happy, enjoying and celebration day.
  • Do take note of the guests who has special requests like having vegetarian food like me. Let the manager knows and remind him/her about it. Make sure the waiter/waitress serves the food. That day, my food wasn’t served at all until I asked the waitress about it, they even forgot to serve me some of the dishes.
  • If possible try to make sure the screen is placed higher so that all guests can see it.
  • Have a timetable and well-organized wedding. Most importantly, get helps from your family members, relatives and friends, without them, you won’t have an enjoyable night.
  • During the wedding actual day, everybody is a newbie, so seek opinions and helps from the elderly, experienced people on how and what things needs to be done. Don’t be shy, I’m sure you want to have a happy night.

Vegetarian Spaghetti

Posted by icyelite on June 29, 2008

Yum Yum Yum Delicious! It has been quite sometime since I last ate spaghetti. The vegetarian spaghetti sold outside are usually mushroom spaghetti with white sauce and shitake mushroom. But the one that mum always cooks is red in color with baked beans and potatoes inside.

Main equipments required when you cook spaghetti:

  1. 2 pots – one to cook the gravy/spaghetti soup, the other for boiling the spaghetti
  2. Food shredder – to shred the potatoes
  3. Electronic grinder/mixer if you have it – to smash the potatoes or use a fork to smash it

Recipe of Vegetarian Spaghetti

Baked Beans
Button Mushroom
Coriander leaves
Vegetarian Ham
Vegetarian Spaghetti Sauce

Mushroom Seasoning
Vegetarian Oyster Sauce

  1. Cook a hot pot of water.
  2. When the water has boiled, put the spaghetti into the pot.
  3. Peel the potatoes’ skin and shred the potatoes.
  4. Bring the pot of potatoes to boil in another pot.
  5. When the spaghetti is boiled, take out the spaghetti and wash it with tap water. This is to prevent the spaghetti from being sticky later.
  6. After the potatoes are boiled, scooped out the shredded potatoes.
  7. Smash the shredded potatoes manually or electronically.
  8. Once the potatoes are smashed, put it back into the pot of water used to cook the potatoes just now.
  9. Add more water to the pot.
  10. Slice the button mushroom into flat pieces.
  11. Add the remaining ingredients and the seasoning into the pot.
  12. Sliced the ham into long stripes.
  13. Cook scrambled eggs into thin layer and cut it into stripes for garnish.
  14. When the soup is cooked, you are ready to serve.

  • Put the spaghetti and spaghetti gravy on a plate.
  • Put the eggs and hams on top of the spaghetti.
  • Sprinkle basil leaves and coriander leaves on top.
  • Lastly, serve the spaghetti with Tobasco or ground chili.

Take a look at the ingredients and the final product of my home-made spaghetti:
